The Educational Program

During the first four hours of class time, we teach the traditional academic classes of language arts, mathematics, social studies, the sciences, and applied and fine arts. Typically, students who remain at New School for at least one semester make major gains in reading and math scores. Understanding that traditional methods of instruction were not effective for most of our students, we attempt to use the Multiple Intelligences model in as much teaching as possible. More information about the current academic curriculum and thematic units being taught is available by speaking to the staff. In the afternoon (we start at 8 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.), we focus on attitude adjustment, using the following methods:

The personal attention necessary for this intensive support during this critical period of change is possible because of our very qualified staff. We have six very experienced and caring full time staff, plus three qualified counselors provided by Youth Services. We also employ five part-time specialist teachers, and many local agencies provide staff as well. We have four full-time teachers and a full-time office manager, all bilingual. We are very proud of our caring staff, all of whom serve as surrogate parents and mentors for our students. At our new location behind the Overlook Shopping Center, we have easy access to all of the recreational facilities of Ramsay Park, which is a big improvement from our previous site. Our location in downtown Watsonville allows us access to many parks, libraries, and other facilities. We guarantee that if a student stays at New School for a full semester, s/he will dramatically improve behavior at home and reading and math test scores in school.
