New School Community Day High School

The Monterey Bay Alternative Schools Athletic League is the only competitive sports league organized exclusively for alternative schools in the state of California. The New School Aztecs compete in  volleyball, basketball, softball and soccer within the MBASAL every year. 

 

Sportsmanship, safety, skill development and character development are emphasized to New School’s teams and throughout the league. Sports are carefully integrated into New School’s curriculum so that students must perform at higher behavioral and academic standards in order to participate, and it works!

 

As former Aztec student athlete Laura Martinez pointed out in the Watsonville Patch last volleyball season, New School’s sports, “gets you out of trouble and makes you think positive things.”

 

Aztecs were able to field two full co-ed volleyball teams and girls, boys and co-ed basketball teams in the winter. Students even had the opportunity to play against league coaches in volleyball and basketball at the end of their respective seasons.

 

New School student athletes learned a hard lesson at the end of the 2012/2013 sports program year when their soccer and softball seasons were cut short due to poor attitudes and a lack of effort during practices. Up until the time those seasons were called to a halt, New School was in contention for the soccer championship and our softball teams were showing great improvements.

 

Students entering New School’s 2013/2014 sports programs know they will be held accountable for their best efforts during practices and in games in order to best represent themselves, their teams and our school.
